No singer in history, no musician in history has been feted by a book such as this. Nilsson was never my favourite Wagner soprano - Flagstad has always been my favourite. But Nilsson had a unique voice and a personality that put her among the greats. In this the centenary of her birth the record labels are going all out with box sets and other special issues. But the greatest homage to her is this unique book. Huge, not just in number of pages (over 700) but in sheer size and weight. No musical artist has ever been honored by a book of this size and quality. There are statements by colleagues and other notables, as well as interviews and statements by Nilsson herself. There are photographic reproductions of reviews and newspaper notices, record reviews, a timeline of her life, etc. But the core of this book is the huge collection of photographs of stage performances. Simply stunning collection impeccably reproduced. The entire book is a work of art, printed on high-quality thick paper, sewn- and cloth-bound, and the entire book housed in a sturdy presentation box. Is it worth the price? Yes, and double the price! I plan on spending many hours in this book while listening to my many recordings with Nilsson in her great roles.
The content includes three homages by the recipients of the Birgit Nilsson Prize (Plácido Domingo, Riccardo Muti, and Clemens Hellsberg representing the Vienna Philharmonic), an article on the prize by Peter Blaha (chief editor of Die Bühne), 26 recollections from various people including from her fellow Isoldes Martha Mödl and Astrid Varnay, the stage director Otto Schenk, and Nilsson's long-time publicist Edgar Vincent. Some of these describe in some detail what Nilsson sounded like in person and for me this was absolutely fascinating as I had never heard her in person. Each of these are presented in their original language and in English translation.Then we have the bulk of the book: over 350 pages of photographs of Nilsson in all stages of her career. Followed by nearly 150 pages of photo reproduction of reviews, articles of appreciation, and obituaries from various printed media. And finally several dozen pages of photos from her private life and from the Birgit Nilsson Museum.This book is a labor of love.
In the early 1980's I had purchased one of the new Advent projection television systems with the large screen placed at one end of the room and the projection unit located approximately in the middle of the room. A Pioneer supplemental stereo sound system and laser disc player were integral parts of this home theater. One of my earliest laser disc album purchases was the Metropolitan Opera Centennial Gala which occurred in October 1983. This particular MET Gala was and may still be one of the longest in duration; an all afternoon session, a dinner break and then an evening concluding session. Birgit Nilsson was the penultimate performer in the evening with only the closing duet of Leontyne Price and Luciano Pavarotti following. Ms. Nilsson had retired from the operatic stage unannounced approximately one year earlier in 1982. With regard to farewell performances she had stated previously, "Never, it is like going to your own funeral." When she entered the stage that evening in October the roar and stomping of the audience was deafening. She had only returned to the MET stage in 1979 after an absence since 1975 due to issues with the United States Income Tax authorities. But when she rendered Isolde's Narrative and Curse, it was breathtaking in it's intensity and her vocal powers seemed as strong as ever. Her facial expression at the conclusion well indicated her involvement in the moment. The presentation case cover photograph for this book captures that evening's appearance. The publication of this book, "An Homage" has been largely subsidized by the Birgit Nilsson Foundation to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of her birth. This same foundation awards the Birgit Nilsson Prize once every three years; the first recipient, Placido Domingo in 2009, was selected by Ms. Nilsson herself prior to her death, her choice being placed in a sealed envelope to be opened at the appropriate time. The second recipient was Maestro Ricardo Muti in 2011 and the third was the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2014. The fourth, most recently, was awarded to Swedish Soprano Nina Stemme in 2018. In addition to the recognition accorded the prize has a cash award of $1,000,000. Ms. Nilsson was known for her humor and is quoted as saying that "Wagner made me famous, Puccini made me rich". Richard Strauss could be tossed in for good measure. And indeed she amassed a sizeable fortune during her storied career as one of the most highly paid operatic performers in history. She was astute in business and essentially was her own manager. At over seven hundred pages, this book with it's many large size photographs, voluminous text, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia will be interesting to any opera lover. Also included are pictures of Nilssons colleagues and contemporaries, as commentators and otherwise. There is even one recipe.
I received this promptly from Amazon. It is a beautifully crafted book, over 700 pages long. There are many pictures from various aspects of her career including some from her personal life that I had never seen before. The book comes in a case, with a dust jacket covering the book within. Although probably a specialized collector's item in general, anyone who particularly loved Birgit Nilsson's voice and art and who likes reading these sorts of historical items will really enjoy it. I am very happy with this purchase and I recommend it.
